This is why I travel!

Do you ever just need to get away?  Even if it’s just in your head, sometimes a break is needed.  But why can’t you make those mind vacations a reality?  What’s holding you back?

“I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

New York

Central Park, New York

Being born in New York City means something.  I had the great pleasure to grow up around every type of person in the world, taste every type of food and get glimpses of so many different cultures.  Seeds were planted. It’s because of NYC that I’ve always dreamed of going.  It didn’t always matter where, I just wanted to go.  As I got older, the places I wanted to go became more vivid.  I fell in love with Italy while watching my favorite soap opera.  I loved it so much I took Italian for a year in college.  That didn’t work out, but my love affair with Italy never faded.  It was a place I knew I’d get to.  In 2004, my dream was finally realized.  The reality was so much better than the dream, but it may have been the dream that made the reality that much better.  There is something so exhilarating about checking a dream off the list.  Italy stood for so much more than history and buildings and great food, it was me making a choice to chase my dreams.  Once you start traveling there is a light turned on that never turns off.  Getting to experience the world firsthand is an education like nothing else you’ll know.  Before you know it, you’re changed.  How can you not be?  Your perspective changes, your horizons broaden and your palate expands.  Italy changed me in ways I couldn’t imagine.

“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life”

Jack Kerouac

After my first trip to Italy and Paris (I know I didn’t mention it, but Paris was part of the initial trip outside the U.S) all I could think about was where I’d go next.

I always hated hearing people say they traveled around the world, but never in their own country.  I didn’t want to be “that” person.  I had most of the east coast covered, and in 2005 I took a trip cross country with John Mayer as our soundtrack.  Yes, we were traveling for music, but we were really traveling for lifelong memories that stay with us today.  What a beautiful country we have.  I’m happy to say I’ve been to most states in the United States and look forward to seeing the rest.

Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain

My next big adventure was moving to Barcelona sight unseen.  No, I had never been to Spain.  No, I didn’t have a job.  No, I didn’t speak Catalan, and only sort of spoke Spanish.  And, no, I didn’t know anyone there.  Before I knew it, I ended up creating a life with friends and jobs and experiences.  Although I was well into my adulthood, part of me feels like I grew up in Barcelona.  It too changed me.  I even got married there.  Living in another part of Spain inspired our business, Breezy Tee.  It was a year ago in Granada that I had the idea for our business.
We’ve since moved back to Portugal, where I currently reside.   Every new place I go leaves parts of itself on my soul.

“Travel is never a matter of money but of courage”

Paulo Coelho

I remember one summer in my mid-twenties where I practically wore the same two t-shirts for weeks.  The little bit of money I had I wanted to spend on live music.

I traveled on Greyhound buses from New York to Ohio to feed my desire to go.  I didn’t care that I was on a bus for 16 hours, or that the smell might haunt me for life (FYI, it does) I was going.  That need to go was more important than new clothes.  I got to see new things.  The first time I went to Italy, we stayed at cheap hostels and apartments.  We bought cheap food at markets instead of going to lots of restaurants.  I’ve only ever traveled on a budget.  I might have more t-shirts now, but I will sacrifice if it means traveling and all that traveling means.

“To travel is to live.”

Hans Christian Andersen

So what am I saying?  I’m saying that dreams are not meant to stay in your head.  That is never their point.  They are just the blueprints, you have to be the architect that makes them happen.   If it means traveling to the state next to yours, a new country or a new town, just go.

With each new place I get wiser.  I get more tolerant.  I learn more about myself.  I learn more about the world.  I appreciate everything in my life so much more. This is why I travel and why you should too!
